The Canisius women’s basketball team fell, 72-67, as Long Beach State made the first shot in overtime in the opening game of the Beach Classic at the Walter Pyramid on Thursday night.
Sophomore Kayla Hoohuli led Canisius with 18 points, making four three-pointers. Ashley Durham added 14 points.
“I was really pleased with our effort and energy tonight, but we got back on our heels a little bit when Long Beach made its run,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said.
Canisius will play at 5 p.m. today in the consolation of the Beach Classic, facing the loser of the Albany-Sam Houston State game.
Meanwhile, the University at Buffalo women’s team turns its attention away from an exam break to focus on fastbreaks.
The Bulls (1-9), who have been off for the past 13 days, host Big 4 rival Niagara University at 2 this afternoon at Alumni Arena. The Bulls have not played since a 65-60 loss to Binghamton on Dec. 8 and are looking to continue a seven-game winning streak against the Purple Eagles.
Niagara (5-4) is coming off a 66-63 overtime victory over Colgate this past Sunday. The Purple Eagles have won back-to-back games and four of their last five, including a victory over Mid-American Conference member Kent State.
