Western New York Heritage Press is hosting a student essay contest for students in grades four and up. The essays should focus on some aspect of the art, architecture or history of Western New York. Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center in Hamburg will offer cross-country skiing and snowshoeing or a nature walk at 10 a.m. Dec. 29. Participants must bring skis or snowshoes. The Friends Committee of the Amherst Symphony Orchestra and the Williamsville Rotary will offer a scholarship to a high school senior living in Amherst and planning to study music at an accredited music school. This year the award has been increased to $1,500. Auditions will be held Feb. 2; the deadline for applications is Jan. 11.
