A Clarence man was charged Thursday with three misdemeanor counts of sexual abuse, forcible touching and acting in a manner injurious to a child.

Richard Cannistrea, 67, of Boyd Drive, is accused of abusing a child under 12 in the town in 2005 and 2006, Erie County sheriff’s officials reported.

The matter wasn’t initially reported because the child’s parents decided to handle the matter internally, officials said, but at the insistence of a family friend, the child recently contacted the Sheriff’s Office after learning Cannistra was now baby-sitting three young children.

Deputies said Cannistra has been issued appearance tickets for a pending Clarence Town Court session.
