A candlelight vigil in East Aurora’s Hamlin Park to remember the Newtown, Conn., shooting victims is planned for 7 p.m. Thursday.
Village resident Mary Lynn Acee is organizing the hourlong vigil, which will be held near the Roycroft Pavilion section of the park.
Those attending are asked to bring their own candle or light. Children’s toiletries also will be collected to donate to the FISH pantry in East Aurora.
The vigil is expected to include music, a prayer and reading the names of the victims. Attendees also may have the opportunity to write notes to the community of Newtown, which would be forwarded from East Aurora to town leaders.
East Aurora village leaders waived the temporary-use permit fee that typically would be charged to groups using the park for an event. “This is not like a parade, a road race or a picnic,” Mayor Allan Kasprzak said, noting the immediacy of the vigil. “If someone has a problem with it, they can call me.”
