Members of the Town Board and the Mount Vernon Sewer District commissisoners conducted a rare joint meeting last week as part of the dissolution of the district.

Mount Vernon Sewer District will dissolve as an independent commissioner district, and Erie County will operate and maintain the system.

The town will own the district once it is dissolved, Supervisor Steven Walters said The Town Board approved the agreement, which is subject to a permissive referendum in the district. Little will change for the sewer district, and property owners within the district will continue to pay for the services.

Hamburg does not have the means to operate and maintain the Mount Vernon district, since Erie County took over the town’s sewers in 2008. “Our long term goal is those assets be turned over to the county,” Walters said. “We don’t want to own these assets.”

The dissolution leaves only the Woodlawn sewer district as an independent sewer district in the town.
