Dr. Richard M. Nowak of Springville, a former physician at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, died Thursday in the hospital where he attended patients for about 30 years. He was 80.
Born in Buffalo, he earned his undergraduate degree from Canisius College and his medical degree from Creighton University, Omaha, Neb.
He was a member of the American Medical Association and a past president of the hospital board, Medical Arts Society, Professional Businessman’s Association and the Springville Athletic Scholarship Committee. Dr. Nowak also was a commander in the U.S. Navy.
In addition, he performed as a soloist with the Canisius College Glee Club, the Chopin Singing Society and the Springville Country Club.
He married the former Patricia A. Gruber in 1958. She died in May 2011.
He is survived by a son, Dr. Martin J., and three daughters, Dr. Kate Riffee, Suzanne McDonnell and Patricia Mikula.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 190 Franklin St., Springville.
