"The Sirfjam Stephanapolous Christmas Sing-A-Long Seasonal Affective Disorder Spectacular Music Pageant Variety Show Distaster."
That's what alternative pop musician and songwriter Sufjan Stevens is calling his Yuletide tour, which makes its way to Asbury Hall in Babeville (341 Delaware Ave.) at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
So what's the deal? Well, this is indeed a concert program of holiday songs, be assured. But be equally assured that this will be a bawdy, left-of-center take on Christmas music. Stevens will be performing the majority of the songs that fill his twin Christmas box sets – many of which are "holiday classics in waiting" penned by Stevens and his list of collaborators, among them members of the National, Arcade Fire and Inlets. Also among the gaudy gift-wrapped goodies are familiar holiday tunes granted the full-on Stevens treatment.
This all-holiday music program will include a healthy dose of crowd participation numbers. So leave your Scrooge sneer and Grinch grimace at home on Tuesday! Stevens will be joined by a five-piece band comprised of Rosie Thomas, Nedelle Torissi, Casey Foubert, James McAlister and Ben Lanz.
Tickets are $20 (box office, Tickets.com and Rust Belt Books, 202 Allen St.).
