Shawn Colvin offers a quote from the late poet Anne Sexton as a preface to her recently published memoir, "Diamond in the Rough."

"Put your ear down close to your soul and listen hard," are Sexton's words, but they apply to Colvin's 20-plus years as a singer/songwriter and record maker. An eye and an ear for the intimate detail, a tendency toward both understatement and honest expression, and the ability to unearth the universal resonance in the personal and particular these traits have marked Colvin's work from her 1989 debut through this year's Buddy Miller-produced roots music tour de force, "All Fall Down."

Colvin will perform an intimate solo acoustic show at 8 p.m. Sunday in the Buffalo State College Performing Arts Center in Rockwell Hall. Tickets are $30 to $35 with discounts for seniors, students and Buffalo State College faculty (box office or call 878-3005). Visit www.buffalostatepac.org.
