The New York State Golden Gloves Tournament will begin at 5 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Tralf Music Hall, 622 Main St., with first-round bouts.

The tournament, which will take place over the course of four Saturdays Jan. 12-April 27, is open to all amateur fighters (sub novice up to open class) from upstate, the north country, Adirondacks and downstate (not including the New York City area, which has its own tournament).

The deadline for registering for the tournament is Jan. 4. Applications are available at or by contacting state Golden Gloves president Don Patterson at or (716) 400-9697.

Advance tickets for the Jan. 12 show cost $25 (general admission) and $30 (ringside) and can be purchased at Carubba Collision, the Tralf Box Office and Doris Records. The cost at the door the day of the tournament is $35 and $40.

The other dates the tournament will be conducted here include Feb. 16, March 30 and April 27. Open-class champions advance to the Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions May 14-18 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
