The long arm of the law has reached all the way to Finland to bring back a man accused in a local insurance fraud scheme.

Igor Vassiliev, 38, a Russian citizen, was arrested in July in Finland, based on an Interpol Red Notice. He is only the third person ever extradited from Finland to the U.S., according to the U.S. Marshal’s Office.

Authorities had been looking for Vassiliev since 2005, when a federal grand jury handed up indictments charging him with health care fraud and conspiracy to commit health care fraud and mail fraud. He was one of 30 people charged. So far, 27 have been convicted.

Prosecutors said Vassiliev took part in two car collisions staged in 2001 to collect money from insurance companies. Vassiliev also is accused of faking injuries in the accidents to collect personal injury settlements from the insurers.
