A community Christmas tree lighting ceremony Wednesday highlights this week in West Seneca.

Members of the community, including the town’s chamber of commerce, residents, employees and family members from the McGuire Group’s Seneca Health Care Center will hold a day-long celebration at the 2987 Seneca St. center at Seneca and Center Road.

Santa Claus is scheduled to visit the center at 12:30 p.m. There will be holiday caroling from area students from the West Seneca schools at 3:30 p.m. and then from 5-6 p.m. the outdoor ceremony with the tree lighting will be held.

Officials announced that hot cocoa and small appetizers will also be served in the main solarium of the center.

It’s been a holiday kind of week in West Seneca. The Pines Garden Center on Old French Road held a Polish Heritage Festival Saturday with various attractions including food tasting, the traditional Polish Santa as well as Polish artists, authors and the Polish Heritage Dancers.

• The annual election for Fire District No. 3 will be held from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at 2400 Berg Road. One commissioner will be elected for a five-year term starting Jan. 1, 2013.

• The Zoning Board of Appeals will hold a 7 p.m. Wednesday meeting at West Seneca Town Hall, 1250 Union Road. The agenda includes requests for variances to exceed a fence height requirement, play live music and erect temporary structures. Full details can be found at westseneca.net.

• The Planning Board will hold a 7 p.m. Thursday meeting in Town Hall. A pair of items are on the agenda including a request from Lowell B. Dewey, P.E. The firm seeks site plan approval for a 47-unit senior independent living facility at Park Lane off Union Road and a request from Gerard Jakubczak who seeks approval for addition of drive-thru and drive-thru pick up window at Kone King, 865 Center Road.

• The Charles E. Burchfield Nature & Art Center, 2001 Union Road, is continuing to accept donations of non-perishable food items through next Sunday as part of the West Seneca Lions Club’s annual food drive. The Lions Club will be distributing the items collected to needy families in the community. The club serves upward of 80 families every year through the food drive.
