James R. Otis, president of E.D. Farrell Co. Inc., which sold Yale Industrial Trucks, died of lung cancer Friday in St. Joseph Campus of Sisters Hospital, Cheektowaga. He was 75.
Born in Kalamazoo, Mich., Mr. Otis moved to Buffalo in 1959 and joined E.D. Farrell, a Buffalo supplier of forklifts and other lift devices used in the industrial sector, where he spent his entire career, retiring as president in 2006.
While at Farrell, Mr. Otis earned a law degree from LaSalle University in Chicago. He succeeded his stepfather, Edward D. Farrell, as president and owner in 1969.
Mr. Otis, who was known to enjoy a good joke, enjoyed networking with customers, employees and other Yale dealers and took pride in mentoring his sons, Guy R. and Edward R., in the intricacies of the family business.
A longtime parishioner of St. Mary Catholic Church in Swormville, Mr. Otis was a member of the Parish Council and Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA),
In addition to his two sons, survivors include his wife of 34 years, the former Julie E. Krok; two daughters, Deborah A. Moran and Diana L.; and a brother, Timothy D.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 5271 Clinton St., Elma.
