There’s going to be several streaks broken by Canisius College this season and it snapped a few big ones against Fairfield.

The Golden Griffins won their conference opener on Friday night, defeating the Stags, 67-55, ending a nine-game losing streak against Fairfield dating back to 2008. Canisius, which finished 1-17 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play last year, also snapped a 12-game losing streak in league play. It was also the their first MAAC road victory since beating Rider on Feb. 11, 2011, a span of 11 games.

The Stags (4-5, 0-1) cut what was once a 12-point Golden Griffins lead to 55-49 with eight minutes left then both teams went scoreless over the next five minutes. Harold Washington finally ended the drought with a jumper to launch a 12-6 run to end the game.

Washington and backcourt mate Billy Baron led Canisius with 19 points each, while Jordan Heath added 10. Chris Manhertz pulled in a game-high 11 rebounds for the Griffs, who are off to a 5-1 start for the first time since 1974-75.
