Look for Buffalo-born singer and stage performer Faith Marion Robinson in “A Celtic Awakening” at 6:30 p.m. Sunday on WNED-TV.
The program, a musical voyage through Irish history, was filmed at the Masonic Temple Chapel in Detroit and on location in Dublin, Antrim in Northern Ireland, County Clare and County Kerry.
The show’s backstory begins in 2005, when Robinson recorded her first album, “A Journey Home” at Roseland Studios in Moate, Ireland.
“It embodied my love of Ireland,” she explained during a recent phone interview from her home outside Philadelphia. “But mostly it’s a homecoming to me – all those different periods of my life encapsulated in my album. I love the storytelling of Irish songs.”
A second album titled “Celtic Dreams” followed in 2009, according to Robinson, but it was never released. Instead, Robinson and her husband, Padraig Guinan, combined both albums and added a story line to create “A Celtic Awakening,” their first public television production.
Backed by a troupe of Celtic musicians, Robinson performs 17 songs drawn from folk, contemporary and popular music.
Songs include: “Something’s Coming,” “Castle of Dromore,” “Danny Boy” and “Lannigan’s Ball.”
The story they tell is motivated by Irish history, a love of countryside and the devotion to family.
Robinson grew up in Tonawanda in a family of four children. She attended Community Music School of Buffalo, St. Christopher School and Cardinal O’Hara High School, where she said she was voted most talented by her classmates. She also sang with the Children’s Chorus of the Tonawandas.
Robinson is heading to Buffalo this weekend so she can watch the local airing of “A Celtic Awakening” with family and friends.
She and her husband split their time between his family home in Dublin and Ballydehob, Ireland, and their farmhouse outside Philadelphia.
And, she said, “We’ll actually be taking [‘A Celtic Awakening’] on the road for a live concert tour.”
For DVR users, “A Celtic Awakening” will be repeated by WNED at 4 a.m. Dec. 27.
