Betty J. Short, a retired elementary school teacher, died Sunday in her Town of Tonawanda home. She was 87.
Born in Buffalo, Miss Short received her bachelor’s degree from Buffalo State Teachers College and earned a master’s degree from Canisius College.
She taught fifth grade for more than 40 years in the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda schools, primarily at Philip Sheridan Elementary School. After retiring, she taught religion classes at St. Andrew and St. Timothy Catholic churches. She also assisted with confirmation classes and summer Bible study at St. Timothy’s.
She was the founder and director of the St. Patrick’s Scholarship and Student Exchange Fund and co-founder of Rosary Makers at St. Andrew’s Church. She was a member of the Daughters of Erin, the Third Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the 101 Foundation Inc. She visited Ireland many times.
Surviving are two brothers, Austin and Richard.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Timothy’s Church, 565 East Park Drive, Town of Tonawanda.
