The Niagara hockey team (10-2-3), winners of eight straight games and boasting a national-leading 11-game unbeaten streak, moved up two spots to No. 18 in the U.S. College Hockey Online National Poll on Monday.
Meanwhile, Niagara forward Giancarlo Iuorio was named Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week after recording three goals and two assists in two wins last weekend against Sacred Heart.
The team also announced it will host a Teddy Bear Toss during its 7 p.m. game Dec. 12 against RIT at Dwyer Arena in Lewiston. The event will benefit Carly’s Club for Kids and Cancer Research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
Niagara is asking fans attending the game to bring a new teddy bear, stuffed animal or toy to the game in exchange for a discounted ticket.
The soft items will be tossed on the ice after the first Purple Eagles goal of the game. Items too hard to be thrown on the ice can be placed in bins provided at the arena. The team will deliver all donated items to patients on Dec. 14.
Canisius College’s Tony Capobianco earned Atlantic Hockey Goalie of the Week honors after stopping 81 of 82 shots in two wins over UConn last week.
He made 36 saves in a 3-0 win Friday for his second career shutout. He followed that with a 44-save gem to help the Griffs win their third in a row.
