East Aurora’s treasured iconic fieldstone wall that has bordered the Roycroft Campus along Grove Street for 100 years is on the road to restoration.

Work to restore the campus-side of the wall running from Main Street to Oakwood Avenue began in early November as part of a $140,000 project.

The head of the Roycroft Campus Corp. is thrilled because it’s been a dream for so long and has been embraced by the community, which helped contribute $27,000 of the money necessary to do the work.

“People identify the perimeter of the campus by the wall. You constantly see people walking on the wall and pictures being taken of it,” said Christine Peters, the RCC executive director. “It’s just part of life in East Aruora. It’s part of a nostalgic piece of the Roycroft Campus.”

The plan is to restore the wall just as Arts and Crafts Colony founder Elbert Hubbard envisioned it when it was built from fieldstone lugged in by local farmers. The wall faces the Roycroft Inn.

The deteriorated wall has been crumbling for years, with plans have been in the works for some time to restore it to its original grandeur.

A fundraiser last year known as ROCKstoration raised $27,000 from the community, while state grants and other fundraising are paying for the remainder of the project.

The work will take an estimated six to eight weeks to complete, but because of winter weather, will have to be suspended soon and likely finish in the spring, Peters said.

Contractor Raymond E. Kelley Inc. of Bowmansville, which worked on the Main Street stone wall reconstruction for the state as part of the Main Street makeover, is doing the iconic wall.

Other improvements on tap for the campus include landscaping and hard surface work, including parking areas, set to begin next spring, Peters said.
