A van that seemed to have a mind of its own slipped into gear, crossed a Grand Island road and slammed into a garage, Grand Island Fire Company public information officer Ray Pauley said Sunday.
No one was hurt in the crash that occurred shortly after 9 a.m.
An unoccupied 1995 Ford Econoline van had been left idling in a Fix Road driveway. Its transmission popped into reverse, causing the van to back about 80 feet down the driveway and across the road to collide with the rear of another homeowner’s garage. Pauley estimated damage of about $2,000 to the garage.
Federal officials several years ago recalled 1995 Econolines because of defective parking brake cables.
