A Depew man who was in the Erie County Holding Center on burglary charges died late Friday afternoon after being transported to Erie County Medical Center for a mental health evaluation Wednesday night.

Officials said the cause of death was not suicide, but were still investigating. An autopsy is being conducted Saturday.

Richard A. Metcalf, 35, of Marrano Drive, formerly of Lancaster, was arrested Tuesday on burglary charges by Depew Police. Because Metcalf was exhibiting strange and combative behavior, Depew police took him to ECMC with an elevated heart rate. He was evaluated, then released back to the custody of Depew Police for arraignment on Tuesday.

Depew Police Chief Stanley Carwile said Saturday that Metcalf was “acting strange” when he was arrested, but he calmed down and was released back to his department after he was determined to be OK.

After he was arraigned in Depew, Metcalf was taken by a Depew officer to the Holding Center.

While in the Holding Center, Metcalf showed signs of mental illness and was combative with officers, according to an incident report. He was returned to ECMC late Wednesday night for a mental health evaluation, but suffered some type of a medical emergency while being transported, according to Erie County sheriff officials. Metcalf remained in intensive care until he died late Friday afternoon, according to officials.

Mary Murray, a spokesperson for the Erie County Sheriff Department, said Saturday the investigation continues into his death.
