One of two Elma residents who fielded telephones calls this week telling them they won a large sum of money in a nationally promoted contest was bilked out of “several-thousand dollars,” Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard said Friday.

Howard said the residents targeted by the scam received calls on Wednesday and Thursday. They were told they had just won Publishers clearing House giveaway.

The victims were then asked to provide perrsonal information, including credit card and bank information, and Social Security number, Howard said.

“In one of the cases,” he added, “the victim was also asked to send money to cover acceptance fees and taxes” and sent send several-thousand dollars to the perpetrator.

“Anyone who feels that they may have been so victimized is encouraged to contact their local police department,” Howard said. Call the detective bureau at (716) 858-6670.
