The annual All-Western New York football issue is Saturday. Scheer comes up big for East Aurora

When junior Nick Scheer took to the mat for his match at 145 pounds, he didn’t just need to win, he needed a pin in order to give his East Aurora team a victory.

Scheer came through. He pinned Jeremy Spitzberg at 2:30 to give the Blue Devils a 43-42 win over Maryvale in both team’s season-opening ECIC III wrestling match.

Andrew Lazickas (132 pounds) and Tyler Hall (195 pounds) also earned pins for East Aurora to set up the final match.

“The big thing with our team this year is that we have some juniors and seniors and then all freshmen who have never wrestled before,” East Aurora coach John Mion said. “My veterans on the team really came up big. They had to get pins. They couldn’t just get wins. It was an awesome experience for the younger guys to see the veterans come through at such a high level.”

Nichols, Maryvale advance

Nichols scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to earn a 46-44 win over Cleveland Hill in the Lancaster Tipoff Tournament. Sophomores Christopher Miner and Cameron Lewis each had 11 points for the Vikings.

Nichols will meet Maryvale in the title game at 7:30 on Friday after the Flyers defeated Lancaster, 72-57.
