The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Buffalo announced Wednesday that two Niagara County men have been arrested in Klamath Falls, Ore., and charged with the Aug. 12 burglary of a Middleport pharmacy, where between 15,000 and 20,000 pills were stolen.

The defendants are William H. Chapple III, 45, of Pine Street, Lockport, and Cody S. Broecker, 21, of Bear Ridge Road, Pendleton.

When Niagara County sheriff’s deputies searched Chapple’s apartment Aug. 14, they recovered hundreds of pills and capsules allegedly stolen from the Middleport Family Health Center, but Chapple and Broecker had left the area, Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank T. Pimentel said.

Police had raided Chapple’s apartment May 15 and seized 281 marijuana plants and three kinds of pain pills, authorities said. He failed to appear for an arraignment on those charges Nov. 20 in Niagara County Court.

The maximum penalty on the local marijuana indictment is 2½ years in prison, but both Chapple and Broecker face maximum federal sentences of 20 years and a $1 million fine, or both, if convicted of possession of drugs with the intent to distribute, and 20 years and a $250,000 fine on the burglary charges.
