This is unfamiliar territory for the St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team — a losing streak.
The Bonnies dropped a 72-71 double overtime decision to North Texas in the New Mexico Tournament Saturday evening. That marks the third straight loss for the Bonnies (3-3).
Meanwhile, the University at Buffalo suffered its fourth straight loss after dropping an 89-73 decision to Eastern Illinois.
In Albuquerque, the Bonnies opened up a 17-4 lead and enjoyed a 30-18 advantage at the break thanks to the three-point shooting of Ashley Zahn. Zahn netted 15 points in the first half, all on three-pointers, to reach her career high in just 20 minutes.
But the Bonnies couldn’t fend off North Texas (1-4) in the second half. The teams traded buckets in the final minutes before a free throw by North Texas tied the game, 56-56 and last second heave by the Mean Green was short.
In the first overtime it was CeCe Dixon who hit a deep three-pointer in transition to tie the game, 65-65, sending the game into a second overtime.
Dixon hit four free throws in the final minute of the double OT to bring Bona within one, but her contested layup at the buzzer missed.
The Bonnies play at Delaware on Wednesday.
In Dayton, Buffalo suffered on the glass in a loss to Eastern Illinois in the Marriott Classic.
Eastern Illinois finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds which it converted into 25 second-chance points.
The Bulls were paced by their underclassmen. Freshman guard Mackenzie Loesing and sophomore guard Sloane Walton (Nichols) each netted 21 points.
The Bulls host Duquesne on Wednesday.
Niagara looks to end its three-game losing streak when it hosts Oakland at 2 p.m. in the Gallagher Center. The Purple Eagles (1-3) won their season opener at Robert Morris then lost to St. Bonaventure, Bowling Green and Bucknell.
