William C. Wittkowsky, of North Tonawanda, who served as the mayor of North Tonawanda from 1976 to 1979 and was the second-generation proprietor of the Wittkowsky Studio of Photography in the city, died Thursday.

He was 87.

A graduate of North Tonawanda High School and of the New York Institute of Photography, Mr. Wittkowsky was considered to have been a master of photography.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded a Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

In later years, he wrote a Flashback column of local history for the Tonawanda News.

Mr. Wittkowsky was a lifelong member of the United Church of Christ, including the Friedens and Salem congregations.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, the former Wilma Kuhn; a daughter, Ann; and a son, David.

A memorial service was held Monday in Salem United Church of Christ in the City of Tonawanda.
