The Canisius boys soccer team’s state Catholic championship earned a big jump in the New York State rankings of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
In the NSCAA Region II poll, which was released Tuesday and consists soley of schools from New York State, Canisius is No. 4.
The top-ranked team is Arlington of Section I (Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties), which won the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class AA title last weekend; No. 2 is New York City’s Martin Luther King, the champion of the city’s Public Schools Athletic League; No. 3 is state AA runner-up Brentwood of Section XI (Long Island’s Suffolk County).
Canisius was unranked in last week’s poll. This week’s poll has Clarence 12th and Lockport 15th.
Canisius is one spot ahead of Long Island’s Chaminade, which it beat, 2-1, in overtime Sunday for the New York State Catholic High Schools Athletic Association title.
The Crusaders became the second Monsignor Martin Association boys team to win a state title; St. Joe’s won in 1995 by beating St. Anthony’s of Long Island.
