Joseph Guppenberger Jr., of Amherst, a retired Amherst town worker, died Friday in Beechwood Nursing Facility, Getzville, after a lengthy illness. He was 78.

A Buffalo native, Mr. Guppenberger graduated from Seneca Vocational High School. He served in the Marine Corps from 1952 to 1953 during the Korean War.

For about 25 years, he was the carpenter at the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Amherst, retiring in 1996.

After retirement, he became a member of WNY Wood Turners and enjoyed making toys for children served by Aspire of WNY. Through the Wood Turners organization, he made and sold items at the Erie County Fair, and the proceeds were donated to Camp Good Days.

Mr. Guppenberger also was involved in fundraising efforts for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and served as an usher at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church for many years.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, the former Joan Brechtel; two sons, Mark and Joseph III; a daughter, Sandy Wheeler; and a sister, Joan Tripi.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday in St. Leo the Great Church, 885 Sweet Home Road, Amherst.
