Two people were injured Sunday afternoon when a small plane crash-landed at the runway of St. Catharines District Airport in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.
The crash occurred about 2:15 p.m., shortly after a pilot of a single-engine, two-seat, kit-style aircraft declared an emergency and turned back in an attempt to land. During a sequence of events, which remain under investigation, the aircraft approached the airport and crash-landed within a short distance of the runway, said the Niagara Regional Police Service.
The pilot and a passenger, who were not named, were taken to St. Catharines General Hospital with injuries that did not appear life-threatening, police said.
Regional police, the St. Catharines Fire Department and Niagara Emergency Medical Services responded to the crash. The investigation into the incident was turned over to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.
