FUTURE FLOWERS – The African Violet & Gesneriad Society of Western New York holds its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Lancaster Volunteer Ambulance Corps building at 40 Embry Place, off Walden Avenue near Central Avenue, Lancaster. Everyone is welcome, and all are invited to bring their plants in for assessment. Designs and ideas will be discussed for the new education boards planned for the society’s show next spring. SMOKE EATERS – Battalion Chief Dan Boland, the historian of the Niagara Falls Fire Department, will give a presentation on the first 100 years of firefighting in the Cataract City for the Friends of Local History from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the auditorium of Niagara Falls Public Library, 1425 Main St. It’s free and open to the public.

Boland, author of “The Niagara Falls Fire Department: A Brief History With Photos,” will discuss how fires were fought in pioneer days and the formation of fire brigades in the villages of Niagara Falls and Suspension Bridge in 1855. He also will show photos of some of the city’s biggest blazes, including the Cataract House, the Gluck Building and the high school.

EARLY BIRDS – It’s not too soon to reserve a spot for the annual Breakfast With Santa at the Buffalo Zoo. Seatings will be at 9 and 11 a.m. Dec. 8, 9, 15 and 16, and advance tickets are required. Tickets for non-members are $14 for adults, $12 for children. Members receive a $3 discount, and children under 2 are admitted free. TREE OF HOPE – Volunteers are needed to help out at the Giving Tree, sponsored by the Family Help Center (formerly the Joan A. Male Family Support Center), from Wednesday through Dec. 10 in Eastern Hills Mall, Clarence.

The tree holds hundreds of “ornaments” listing the first name of an abused or neglected child served by the center, the age, size and gift wish. Shoppers choose a tag, buy a gift and return it to volunteers staffing the table beside the tree. Volunteers, who work three-hour shifts, are especially needed on weekdays.
