A fire just before midnight Thursday left one firefighter injured and caused extensive smoke damage to a home on Evanshire Lane in Amherst, Amherst Fire Control officials said.

A caller reported flames coming out of the wall that backs up to a fireplace in the home at 9 Evanshire, fire officials said.

Firefighters from the Snyder Fire Department were dispatched and saw flames from the front of the house.

Assisted by members of Eggertsville Hose Company, the firefighters were able to contain the fire to one room.

A firefighter fell down the basement stairs, causing possible wrist and rib injuries. The firefighter was taken to Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital.

Officials estimated smoke caused about $150,000 in damage.

The cause remains under investigation.
