Hamburg police are hoping an autopsy and an examination of the victim’s sport utility vehicle may shed some light on why a motorist veered into oncoming traffic on Route 20 on Thursday, causing a three-car accident.

Laurence Karmel, 62, of Orchard Park, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred at about 4:45 p.m. on Route 20/Southwestern Boulevard at Pleasant Avenue. An autopsy will be performed by the Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police said Karmel was eastbound when his SUV crossed the double-yellow lines and collided head-on with a westbound dump truck. An eastbound pickup truck hit Karmel’s from behind afterward.

The names of the drivers of the dump truck and the pickup truck weren’t released by police, who said alcohol wasn’t a factor for either. Injuries to the others involved weren’t serious, police added.

No traffic tickets were issued.
