Erie County Environmental Education Institute presented its 2012 Citizen of the Year Paul MacClennan Award to Paul D. Maurer. Maurer is co-founder and chairman of Re-Tree WNY. The award is named for the retired Buffalo News environmental reporter who covered Love Canal in the 1970s. Maurer co-founded Re-Tree WNY with environmentalist David Colligan in October 2006, following the October surprise snowstorm that destroyed tens of thousands of street and park trees. Re-Tree WNY has since replanted nearly 25,000 trees in 18 area communities with donated funds and an all-volunteer staff.
