Lera Carmichael, a community advocate, died Monday in Buffalo General Medical Center after a lengthy illness. She was 83.

Born Lera Carmichael, the Detroit native graduated from school there.

For more than 12 years, she was a nurse’s aide in private home care, retiring in 1994. She also was a community advocate in the University District.

Surviving are seven sons, Rodney, Tommy, Marvin, Curtis Maxwell, Ray, Carl and Madison; five daughters, Marilyn, Marcella, Elizabeth, Francis and Shirley; and a brother, James Wilson.

Services will be at noon Saturday in Nazareth Missionary Baptist Church, 475 Berkshire Ave.
