Harold E. “Bud” Anderson of Grand Island, a retired teacher and boating enthusiast, died Monday in Maple Lodge at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Batavia. He was 89.

Born in Salamanca, he served in the Army Air Forces during World War II, working in fire control duties at Sheppard Field, Texas.

Mr. Anderson was a teacher in the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda schools and taught for many years at Hoover Middle School.

He also worked as a floor manager at AM&A’s department store.

Mr. Anderson started a Boating Club at Hoover Middle School, where he taught students how to sail and took them out on the water in his cabin cruiser, T-Tote.

He and his wife operated one of the first boat tours in Lake Erie and gave charter cruises of the Niagara River on their boat the Sabre 6. They also were active members of the LaSalle Yacht Club and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

His wife of 30 years, Anita Ackerman Anderson, died in 2010. Surviving are three brothers, Layton, Alfred and Gaylord, and a sister, Joyce Chapman.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Knox United Presbyterian Church, 2595 Elmwood Ave. at Kinsey Avenue, Kenmore.
