Women & Children’s Hospital is expected to announce today a $5 million gift to help construct a new pediatric hospital on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.

The gift is the largest personal donation in a $40 million fundraising campaign for the proposed $200 million facility, which will go up at Ellicott and High streets, across from and connected by a walkway to Buffalo General Medical Center.

In recent months, the John R. Oishei Foundation donated $10 million for the project, and the Children’s Guild Foundation pledged $2 million for the neonatal intensive care unit of the hospital.

Officials plan to announce the name of the $5 million donor this afternoon and provide an update on the fundraising campaign.

Ground-breaking is expected in the spring, and completion is expected in early 2016. Women & Children’s is moving from its longtime Bryant Street location in the Elmwood Village, and the new facility will be renamed the John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital.

Women & Children’s Hospital and Buffalo General Medical Center are operated by Kaleida Health.

Plans for the 10-floor hospital include a range of specialized pediatric services and a family resource center. A Women’s Pavilion will house labor and delivery, postpartum care, the regional perinatal center for high-risk pregnancies and a women’s health center for prenatal and gynecological care.

In addition, officials announced earlier this month that Kaleida Health and Roswell Park Cancer Institute will combine services they now provide in separate locations to care for young patients with cancer and blood diseases on one floor of the hospital.

The children’s hospital, at the urging of its physicians, announced in 2010 its intention to move to the medical campus.

Officials have said they want a smaller, more efficient facility that better accommodates modern health care practices for women and children and that can benefit from proximity to Buffalo General Medical Center.
