An East Side man who admitted that he shot and killed an acquaintance last December was sentenced Tuesday to 23 years in prison.

Wayne P. Vance, 30, of Briscoe Avenue, avoided the maximum 25-year prison term because Erie County Judge Michael F. Pietruszka said his guilty plea showed he accepted responsibility and spared the victim’s family a trial.

Vance pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter for the Dec. 28, 2011 nighttime shooting death of Frederick Gelsey Jr., 30, a New York City resident who was visiting his hometown.

Gelsey was shot at a residence on Briscoe Avenue.
