The body found in the Black Rock Canal about noon Tuesday was identified as that of Reserve U.S. Airman Richard Jones, of the 914th Airlift Wing.

His mother, Mildred, and sister, Michelle, identified the body at the Erie County Medical Examiner’s office about 7 p.m., Michelle Jones told The Buffalo News.

Jones, 23, was last seen at about 11 a.m. Oct. 22, when he told his family he was headed to a store near his family’s Herkimer Street home. He joined the Air Force unit about six years ago.

His mother told The News earlier this month that her son had recently taken up drinking, “which was something he couldn’t handle,” and left a job with a Buffalo management company. He also had become more reclusive, she said.

Michelle Jones said Tuesday night that the family will look to make funeral arrangements after an autopsy is performed to determine what caused her brother’s death.
