James E. Grady, of East Amherst, a retired certified medical sales representative, died Friday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst, after a lengthy illness. He was 78.
Born in Jamaica, Queens, he was a 1957 graduate of Manhattan College, where he majored in political science.
A Buffalo-area resident for 50 years, he was a sales representative for CIBA Pharmaceuticals, retiring in 1993.
Mr. Grady was a Swormville volunteer firefighter for 44 years, served on the Clarence-Newstead Fire Police Board and was a senior EMT instructor.
He also was a first-aid fire captain and served on the Amherst Fire Council.
An avid golfer, he was a former member of Tan Tara Country Club and scored two holes-in-one. He played regularly in charity golf tournaments.
He also was a devoted Buffalo Bills fan.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, the former Margaret Dixon; two daughters, Eileen Crawford and Rosie Ravish; three sons, James, Jerry and Patrick; and a brother, Robert.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary Catholic Church, 6919 Transit Road, Swormville.
