An explosion at an apartment complex in the Village of Alfred Sunday afternoon resulted in two tenants being taken to the hospital and a massive mobilization of first responders in Allegany County.

Alfred police were still trying to account for all the residents of the Rose Apartments, at 34 Glen St. in the village, following the explosion at about 5:10 p.m.

Two tenants were being treated in area hospitals for non-life threatening injuries.

The Rose Apartments have 40 one-bedroom units.

The Alfred Fire Department responded to the scene, along with firefighters from eight other companies, ambulance units from nine companies, Alfred police, the Allegany County sheriff’s office, the state police and Alfred University police.

At 9:30 p.m., the Red Cross set up a shelter at Alfred State College at the request of county emergency management officials, but closed it within an hour when it became apparent it wouldn’t be needed, Red Cross spokesman Jay Bonafede said late Sunday.
