How they got here: Randolph beat the state’s top-ranked team, previously undefeated Maple Grove, 21-0, in Section VI final. Avon routed private school Notre Dame of Batavia, 43-7, in Section V final.
Pre-snap read: Randolph is its typically hard-hitting self, but it has shown the ability to pass (unlike some years where they were almost exclusively a run team). Dowiasz was outstanding in Section VI final. Avon is a physical team that runs a spread. Avon has had its sectional path blocked in recent years by Letchworth, which defeated Maple Grove last year on its way to the state championship. Crye was named the Section V Class DD Offensive Player of the Year; seven different Avon receivers have caught a pass over 30 yards.
What’s next: The winner advances to the state semifinals next Friday at 5 p.m. at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester. The opponent will be the winner of the Central Regional between state D poll No. 3 Sandy Creek (10-0) of Section III (Syracuse area) and No. 1 Tioga (9-1) of Section IV (Binghamton area); that game is tonight at 5 at East Syracuse-Minoa.
