After last weekend’s heavy Shostakovich concert, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra is lightening up with a concert of Broadway songs.
Guest conductor Ted Sperling, who has won awards for his Broadway arranging and orchestrating, is bringing in two Broadway singers. One is Santino Fontina, who is scheduled to star as Prince Charming in next year’s Broadway production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella.” The other is Tiffany Haas, who played Glinda the Good Witch in the touring production of “Wicked.” Together and solo, they’ll be singing music from many musicals including “Camelot,” “Guys and Dolls” and more recent shows like “The Light on the Piazza.”
Though they’re young, the singers bring with them that Broadway sense of show business. Haas talked with The News about that last week, as Hurricane Sandy swirled around her Manhattan high-rise.
“I feel very comfortable on the stage,” she said. “Things don’t always go perfectly – it’s rare that you have a perfect show. The audience is different every night, you have different actors on stage. That’s what makes theater so great. It keeps you on your toes.”
The concert takes place at 10:30 a.m. today and 8 p.m. Saturday in Kleinhans Music Hall. Admission is $31-$51. For info, call 885-5000.
