James S. Yates, a former chief of detectives for the North Tonawanda Police Department, died Wednesday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst. He was 90.

Born in North Tonawanda, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.

Mr. Yates was a 1965 graduate of Erie Community Technical Institute. He joined the North Tonawanda Police Department in 1951. He eventually attained the rank of captain and retired as chief of detectives for the department in 1983.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Barbara Truax; a daughter, Diane; three sons, James J., Dennis and Ronald; and a brother, Martin.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, 800 Niagara Falls Blvd., North Tonawanda.
