A funeral service for Sgt. Brett E. Gornewicz, who was killed Nov. 3 in Afghanistan, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in St. John Catholic Church, 2021 Sandridge Road, Alden.
Sgt. Gornewicz, an Army Reservist on his second deployment overseas, was killed when a roadside bomb exploded. He was 27.
He was born in Buffalo and graduated from Alden High School.
Sgt. Gornewicz enlisted with the Army Reserves in 2006 and was sent to Iraq.
After returning, he graduated from Buffalo State College with a degree in mechanical engineering.
He was working as a computer-aided designer and mechanical designer at a Tonawanda company when he was deployed again, this time to Afghanistan.
Sgt. Gornewicz was assigned to the 680th Engineer Company based in Canandaigua but was temporarily transferred to the 444th Engineer Company in Oswego for his deployment to Afghanistan. The company’s primary mission was to clear roads of improvised explosive devices.
Two other soldiers from upstate New York were killed in the same blast.
Sgt. Gornewicz was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor this fall.
He is survived by his parents, Jack and Margaret, and a sister, Cassandra Cranston.
