A woman hiker was successfully rescued Friday afternoon from the lower Niagara River near the Whirlpool State Park by several area emergency agencies, according to the New York State Park Police.

Authorities said they received a call at 3:32 p.m. reporting a person in the lower river “clinging to a rock.”

Park Police Officers Darryl Borkenhagen and Christopher Gerlach located the victim and brought her safely to land, police reported. The officers were assisted by Park Police Lt. Clyde Doty as well as the U.S. Border Patrol, Erie County’s “Air One” helicopter and the Niagara Falls Fire Department.

The woman was taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.

She was described as a middle-aged woman from Western New York but neither her identity nor her condition were disclosed.
