A manhunt was on for a man who fled from a car crash early Thursday in the Town of Hanover that killed his passenger, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The car was westbound on Routes 5 and 20 at about 3 a.m., turned onto the split on Route 5 and went out of control before slamming into a concrete abutment in a roadside ditch, according to the sheriff’s office.

The car was “destroyed,” said Sheriff Joseph Gerace.

The passenger, Jeremy M. Long, 22, of Silver Creek, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspected driver, Jeremiah S. Burgess, 22, also of Silver Creek, is believed to have fled on foot and has not been located.

The men were friends and co-workers and were believed to have been out together at a bar before the crash, Gerace said.

Anyone with information about Burgess’ whereabouts or the accident is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 753-2131.
