BAR MILL MEMORIES – Featured speaker this week in the First Wednesday program hosted by the Steel Plant Museum of Western New York is teacher and historian Eva M. Doyle, who has written 11 books on African-American history.

TAX BUSTERS – The Buffalo Federation of Neighborhood Centers is looking for volunteers who would like to learn how to prepare income tax returns for seniors, people with disabilities, non-English speakers and other low- to moderate-income folks.

No previous tax experience is necessary. After four Internal Revenue Service training sessions, volunteers will be certified to help out in a variety of positions in the eight locations of the BFNC Free Tax Network, which is supported by the United Way and the IRS Grant Office.

Last year, the service helped prepare nearly 8,800 returns and recovered $13.5 million in tax refunds. Classes are being held through January in the Tri-Main Center, 2495 Main St. For info, call 362-0744.

SECOND HELPINGS – Amherst Meals on Wheels will benefit from an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast from 9:30 a.m. to noon Thursday in the Amherst Senior Center, 370 John James Audubon Parkway. Tickets are $8 for a breakfast that includes sausage, fresh fruit, muffins, juice and coffee. Amherst Meals of Wheels serves about 230 homebound, elderly and handicapped Amherst residents every weekday.

The Lake Erie Italian Club, 3200 South Park Ave., Lackawanna, will host an all-you-can-eat pasta dinner, family style, from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Dinners are $8 adults, $5 kids 12 and under. Children under 3 eat free. Beverages will be available for purchase. For info, call 825-9870.

BANK SHOT – Roswell Park Cancer Institute and Pocketeer Billiards will hold their second annual Shooting Pool for a Cure fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Pocketeer hall, 2444 Clinton St., Cheektowaga.

COLD-BLOODED – Bringing his collection of critters to the Aquarium of Niagara, 701 Whirlpool St., Niagara Falls, on Saturday afternoon is Jeff Musial of Nickel City Reptiles and Exotics. He will put his lizards, snakes, reptiles and amphibians through their paces at 12:30, 2 and 3:30 p.m. in the second-level Community Room.
