WHEATFIELD – A small gargoyle lawn gnome was used to smash open an entry door at Papa Leo’s Pizza Monday.

Niagara County sheriff’s deputies responded to an alarm at the restaurant in the 2200 block of Niagara Falls Boulevard about 1:30 a.m.

Security video provided by the owner found that a suspect, a white male, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, 190 pounds, and wearing a bulky jacket, was seen throwing the lawn gnome through the window, then entering into the waiting area and going behind the counter.

Once inside, the suspect, who appeared to be familiar with the store layout, took cash, rolled coins and a cash box which contained $1,300 in employee checks, deputies reported.

Total loss and damage was estimated at $2,834.
