PITTSFORD — Buffalo State forced four turnovers and limited No. 25-ranked St. John Fisher to just 227 yards total offense in a 17-9 Empire 8 Conference victory before 2,145 at Growney Stadium. The Bengals (6-4, 4-3) finished their first winning regular season since 2000 and have an outside shot at an ECAC bowl bid.
The Bengals recovered three fumbles and intercepted a pass in their second upset of the season over a nationally-ranked opponent. Casey Kacz (Sweet Home) relieved Ryan Lehotsky and led the victory with a pair of touchdown passes. Kacz completed 9 of 18 for 122 yards as he brought the Bengals back from a 9-0 deficit while Rich Pete carried 31 times for 165 yards.
Kacz hit Caesarae Lewis on a 4-yard pass before halftime. The Bengals took the lead on the opening drive of the second half on a 25-yard pass to John Beers. Nate Benoit (Grand Island) kicked a 34-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter.
Jordan Boser had eight tackles, a sack and a forced fumble for Buffalo State while Sean Littlejohn had eight stops, three for loss, and Pasquale Vacchio had eight tackles and a forced fumble.
The loss ended Fisher’s chance for the Empire 8 title and perhaps its NCAA hopes.
