FRENCH CREEK – A 62-year-old Chautauqua County man is in stable condition this morning after being thrown from the ATV he was riding on Mann Road Saturday evening, according to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office.

Ben J. Whitney was driving southeast on Mann Road, not far from his French Creek home, when he apparently made a sharp right turn, causing the ATV to skid and roll over on the ground, deputies said. Whitney, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the ATV, sustaining serious head injuries, deputies said. His ankles were also injured, they said.

The accident was reported at about 6:45 p.m. A passing motorist spotted Whitney in the middle of the road, with his ATV in a ditch, and reported the accident.

Whitney was taken by ambulance to Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa., where he is listed in stable condition, deputies said.

An investigation is ongoing. Speed does not appear to have played a factor in the accident, deputies said.
