State Parks Police are trying to determine what happened to a man whose body was found in the Niagara River near Beaver Island State Park late Sunday afternoon.

The body was found in the water off the Grand Island park’s marina by a pair of fishermen about 4:30 p.m., authorities said.

Late Sunday, a parks police spokesman declined to comment when asked if investigators believe foul play was involved.

“We have some pretty good leads, but it’s an open investigation, and I can’t disclose anything else,” the officer said.

Authorities described the man as a white male, possibly around 60 years of age. The man was about six feet tall and weighed around 200 pounds. They declined to speculate how long he was in the water.

Personnel from the Coast Guard, Erie County Sheriff’s Office and the Grand Island Volunteer Fire company were assisting.
