Jessica Pegula, the daughter of Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula, is one win away from getting a shot at her first professional singles tennis title.
The 18-year-old Pegula, who trains in Florida, on Friday defeated Russian Alla Kudryavtseva, 7-5, 6-0, to advance to Saturday’s semifinals in the Tevlin International in Toronto.
The event is a $50,000 ITF Challenger tournament, tennis’ version of the minor leagues, where players ranked outside the top 100 compete to break into the sport’s upper echelon. Pegula entered the event ranked 156th in the world.
Pegula will face Torontonian Sharon Fichman, world No. 193, for a berth in Sunday’s final.
